URBAN WASTE MANAGEMENT

How does recycling work in Italy?

Italy is top in the European Union for waste recycling at 76.9% of urban, industrial, and other waste.
Towns collect recyclable rubbish door-to-door, with residents required to separate their waste or it's collected from designated large bins.
These bins are labeled to collect glass, plastic, organic waste, and paper.

Waste management in Italy is managed at a municipal level in accordance with national legislation and differs widely from area to area.

Typically, rubbish is collected by a waste disposal company contracted to the comune (municipal authority).

Funding for the system comes from a refuse disposal/garbage tax.
